In Loving Memory of Sanjoy Dev 2008 – 2025

With heavy hearts and the deepest respect, we remember our former Hope Arises student, Sanjoy Dev. Sanjoy was among the very first students to enroll at Hope Arises Schools in January 2021. Even though he was already 13 years old, Sanjoy had never had access to formal education. He was quick to learn, expressed great excitement for learning and attended school regularly.
Sanjoy’s father left the family when Sanjoy was a few months old and the father never provided for the family. His mother works as domestic help at various families for a very limited income. She has endured significant health challenges, making it nearly impossible to provide for even Sanjoy’s basic needs.
The opportunity to learn and be part of the Hope Arises community provided joy and brighter outlook for life for time. Sanjoy remained part of the Hope Arises schoolsy for three years before continuing his onward journey at the age of 16.
After his departure, Sanjoy faced continuous economic hardships, lack of stable home environment and lack of family to associate with. Despite his best efforts to find work suitable for a minor with limited education, he suffered from suffocating poverty. He lived alternately with his mother, relatives and at times on his own.
Hope Arises Schools principal, James Mollick, maintained contact with Sanjoy following him leaving the schools. “Students for time but friends for life!” is James’ motto with our students.
Tragically, facing continued adversity, suffering from depression, and uncertainty for his future, any ray of hope grew dimmer, and dimmer and Sanjoy grew tired to battle the grim realities of his life. Sanjoy passed away on September 21st before reaching the age of 18. He was buried last Saturday. We express our condolences to his mother and extended family. We miss him dearly.
We would like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone who has supported Hope Arises Schools and contributed to assisting children like Sanjoy. Your generosity and commitment have made a significant impact on the lives of many young people facing difficult circumstances.
It is with a deep sense of awareness that we recognize how many of our students continue to endure dire situations. They deserve reassurance for better days to come, fortification in believing in a brighter future, and encouragement to trust in the power of education to shape their future. Your support provides immediate relief. Now is the time to stand by the children in Bangladesh and extend our love for them.
